CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

“Please tell me you gave as good as you got.” Familiarity pushed through her as January struggled to get her bearings.

The past few hours had slipped through her fingers in a blur. There’d been sirens, hasty orders, and bright lights before she’d woken in this room the first time. Not much else, but each time she’d woken, bits and pieces had come back. The apartment above the restaurant, the discovery of the hatch near the kitchen, a killer standing above her with a scalpel. Lincoln had been there. Hadn’t he?

Hints of iodine burned the back of her throat as she rolled her head toward the door. A weak smile broke through the concoction of pain killers and a mild concussion. The skin along her lips threatened to split from dryness. She hadn’t been able to move much considering the blade to her shoulder had punctured through one of four muscles responsible for rotating her arm let alone get a look at the damage. She tried to sit up, aggravating the sutures down her shoulder blade. A hiss escaped her control as she reached for the complimentary hospital mug on the table beside the bed. “Can’t be worse than that time we fell trying to build our own tree house and ended up landing with the wood land on top of us.”

“You’re going to tear your wound open. I’ll get it.” King County Sheriff Blair Sanders clutched the butt of her firearm too tightly as the door automatically swung shut behind her. She crossed to the table and handed off the mug into January’s free hand. The deep olive-green color of her uniform highlighted the fiery redness of her long, pin straight hair. Her sister took a seat and set her elbows onto the tops of her knees. Uniquely Blair. Controlled and casual in a way January had never mastered. Freckles dotted across the bridge of the sheriff’s nose and cheeks as incredibly green eyes filled with a concern her sister rarely let loose.

“Stop looking at me like you’re here to decide whether or not to pull the plug. I’m fine.” She took a swig from the mug and set her head back against the pillows the nurse had built up behind her. Cool water soothed the rough edges along her throat left behind by her screams but failed to wash away the memories.

“Is that right? Well, I talked to your physician, Ri.” Blair spread her hands as if that were enough to explain whatever was going on in her mind. “She seems to think it’s a miracle you survived considering how much blood you lost before the ambulance arrived, and I’m inclined to agree with her given the state of your face.”

“You’re just upset I’d still be voted mostly likely to compete for Ms. Universe in our high school yearbook, even with the bruises.” A laugh shook through her and ignited pain along her shoulder. January braced for another wave, but the pain medication was doing its job for the most part.
